Shoreview Elementary Principal Shatima Walker told the Euclid Board of Education on Sept. 10 that the school achieved a 12% reduction in chronic absenteeism from the 2022–23 to the 2023–24 school year.
"We are proud to report a 12% reduction in our chronic absenteeism rate from the 20 23, 20 24 school year," Walker said during a presentation to the board. She described a mix of attendance-tracking practices, family engagement activities and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) incentives that the school credits for that progress.
The presentation detailed specific programs used to raise attendance and support students: daily classroom attendance tracking, targeted attendance intervention plans for chronically absent students, and incentive programs such as "Panther Bucks" that students earn for good attendance and positive behavior. Walker said Panther Bucks can be redeemed at a school pop-up store and that high-earning students are rewarded with incentives including lunches with the principal and special events.
Walker also described schoolwide events and community partnerships that reinforced attendance goals. She highlighted a collaboration with the Cleveland Browns’ "Stay in the Game" initiative that included an assembly featuring Browns player Cedric Tillman and activities linking attendance and school pride.
Assistant Steve Johnson and other Shoreview staff described family engagement efforts (family game nights, literacy-focused events at the homecoming dance) and classroom-level practices intended to make school more welcoming and to reduce barriers to daily attendance.
Board members praised the presentation and the data. A board member said the Shoreview team’s use of culture and routines to improve attendance was "very exciting" and the board voted to accept the recognitions for students and staff unanimously.
The board did not take additional formal action on the presentation; the district said it would continue districtwide efforts to reduce chronic absenteeism and will report further once state data and report cards are published.
