Coventry Local board approves personnel moves, seeks demo work at track and authorizes levy process

Under the superintendent’s recommendations, the board approved a salary status change for Cassandra Simmons following her completion of a Ph.D., multiple supplemental and coaching contracts for the 2024–25 school year, and several classified hires contingent on clear background checks. The board also accepted a retirement announced for a third-grade teacher, Mrs. Bassett, and rescinded an employment offer for Mrs. Cunningham at her request.
The board moved to rescind an earlier contract with the Educational Service Center of Northeast Ohio for vision therapy and to reapprove a new contract for 2024–25 that the superintendent said is based on an estimated hourly rate of $120 and an annual cost of around $8,000. The superintendent told the board the district will be billed only for hours used.
On facilities procurement, the board authorized a proposal from Barbicus Paving LLC to test-demolish one of the large concrete piers at the district track at a cost not to exceed $27,500. The superintendent explained that the lower figure shown in earlier materials represented a base cost and that the full $27,500 estimate includes roughly 40 hours of labor. “If it takes 10 hours to just to crumble one of those, then we’ll stop after the one, and reassess,” the superintendent said.
The board also approved emergency playground asphalt repairs at Coventry Elementary School under a separate Barbicus Paving quote for $10,550, citing a sinkhole-type opening on the elementary playground as the reason for the urgent work.
The treasurer placed the district’s May 24 financial statements and reconciliations on file, and the board moved and approved two resolutions: one to transition athletic affiliation from the Metro Athletic Conference to the Principals Athletic Conference and another to proceed with submission of a levy renewal to electors under Ohio Revised Code sections 5705.194–5705.197.
The meeting included routine roll-call votes. Clerk-conducted roll calls recorded affirmative votes from the members present and each motion passed as presented.
What happens next: the district will proceed with procurement steps for the Barbicus demo and playground repairs and will work with the board of elections to place the levy renewal before voters per the election timeline for the district. Background checks and final contract language remain contingencies for some hires and agreements.
