Coventry Local board approves personnel moves, a five-year fire-door contract and outside evaluations

The Coventry Local Board of Education on Nov. 20 approved a package of personnel recommendations and district contracts that included supplemental coaching hires, outside psychologist evaluations to cover a staff maternity leave, and a five-year maintenance agreement for pocket fire doors at Coventry High School.
Superintendent recommendations presented at the meeting included supplemental coaching contracts for 2025–26 and other certified supplemental positions. The board recommended hiring Gary Kanaga as varsity head coach for the 2025–26 season “as varsity head coach, at the contracted amount,” the superintendent said. Nonstaff contracts were listed as contingent on receipt of required clear background checks.
On special-education coverage, the board approved a contract with the Summit Educational Service Center to provide up to 10 school psychologist evaluations while district staff are on leave. “Each evaluation will be $1,000 and will be no more than $10,000,” the superintendent said, and the board approved the measure as an insurance policy to meet strict special-education timelines.
The board also approved a five-year preventive-maintenance agreement with Juan Dora Corporation for maintenance of fire doors at Coventry High School at an annual stated cost of $958, effective November 2024 through November 2029. District staff said the contract is intended both to maintain the pocket fire doors and to allow the district’s maintenance lead to learn repair and oversight tasks alongside vendor technicians.
Other approved items included second reading of revised board policies, acceptance of a school-safety and security grant from the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation to offset theater carpet replacement costs, a $500 donation from the VFW to fund an elementary pizza party, and approval of several inventory deletions of electronic devices slated for e-waste recycling.
