During the personnel portion of the June 18 meeting, trustees raised concerns about how coaching and other supplemental positions were announced to staff and outside applicants. A board member said they could not locate a posting for the basketball coaching position and asked whether the district posts vacancies externally when internal candidates decline or do not respond.
Superintendent (speaker 5) said the district recently changed its process to post all supplemental positions together for a 10-day period; she said in this case a personnel issue prompted a different approach for one posting and that the details were not appropriate for public discussion. She offered to provide the missing posting to board members and to discuss personnel-related aspects in executive session.
Trustees urged a consistent public protocol for advertising openings so external candidates can apply when internal candidates do not take positions. One trustee said that even if many internal candidates are interested, the district should still make a public posting to reach outside applicants. The board agreed to follow up and asked staff to forward the specific posting and documentation before the next meeting.
The issue: The board’s concern centered on transparency and process. The superintendent said she would provide the specific posting materials and that the district will post positions to its applicant tracking system (PaySchools/AppliTrack) going forward to avoid confusion. Trustees also discussed that coaching contracts are limited-term and expire annually, requiring periodic re-posting if incumbents do not accept reappointment.
Next step: Staff to forward the posting and the superintendent offered to brief trustees and, if necessary, discuss personnel-sensitive details in the scheduled executive session.
