Middle school students present advisory projects at Chagrin Falls board meeting

A group of Chagrin Falls Middle School students and staff described advisory-led activities and schoolwide events to the Chagrin Falls Exempted Village Board of Education at its Oct. 15 meeting.
The presentation, introduced by Laura Hoye, highlighted the principal's advisory council (PAC), a two-year student leadership group that provides recommendations on school climate, wellness and student achievement. “We call it our PAC and it is a vital part of our school,” the staff presenter said, describing the council’s work on spirit days, assemblies and a planned field day.
Students outlined specific initiatives. One student explaining Red Ribbon Week said the program is “all about making smart choices, standing up for yourself, and living a healthy drug free life,” and described an advisory pumpkin-decorating exercise in which each advisory will decorate a pumpkin to represent an aspiration or healthy choice. Another student who described field day said the event “allows independency… and gives everyone their own ideas,” adding that student choice increases buy-in.
Board members asked clarifying questions about frequency and structure of advisory time; a student replied that eighth-grade advisories meet four times a week and seventh graders meet four times (with a different weekly pattern). Staff said advisory meetings occur regularly and include house challenges, scavenger hunts and community-oriented activities intended to build teamwork, wellness and leadership.
The school presenters also noted that the PAC helps connect students and staff during orientation and other events designed to make new students feel comfortable. The board thanked the students, who received applause before the meeting proceeded to district business.
