A representative from SHP told the Canal Winchester Board of Education on Monday that community advisory teams identified five top priorities for the district’s master facilities plan — a performing arts center, a field house, middle‑school improvements, campus circulation fixes at Indian Trail and Winchester Trail, and stadium upgrades — and recommended advancing design work for the performing arts center as a first phase.
SHP emphasized that some requests from focus groups affect planning and cost while others are design details to be considered later. The performing arts center concept shown to the board would attach to the high school near existing band and choir rooms; SHP said that design work should begin now while the district still has favorable market conditions for construction.
The field house discussion revealed two competing concepts: a large indoor turf area (about 60 yards) suitable for play and practice, and a competition gym with roughly 1,500 retractable seats that also could be reconfigured into smaller practice courts. SHP said the two options have very different land, parking and program impacts and recommended more targeted work with coaches and athletic staff before committing to a concept. The consultant also noted that a new performing arts center would displace some back‑lot parking and trigger a domino of site changes including reoriented baseball/softball fields and added parking.
Board members raised trade‑off questions including community hours and possible city partnerships, whether the district should aim for a multiuse community facility or a school‑focused venue, and the need for a traffic impact study; SHP said a traffic study is ready to begin if the board directs it. SHP recommended the steering team work with the district’s financial advisory team to set a budget for the performing arts center and then decide whether to pursue the field house concurrently or in a later phase.
The district did not take a vote on a project budget; SHP and board members said the next steps are to finalize a PAC budget, visit peer districts for field‑house examples, and return to the steering committee with cost and program recommendations.
