Brooklyn School launches 'Buddies and Ambassadors' program to welcome new students

Assistant Superintendent Lisa Delease introduced a student presentation at the Sept. 16 board meeting highlighting a new Brooklyn School Buddies and Ambassador program intended to help newly enrolled students acclimate to school routines.
Dr. Janet Kubisak and classroom teachers described the program’s structure: teachers submitted nominees; selected students meet with teachers to confirm willingness to serve; ambassadors will assist with student tours, lunch buddies, orientations and family events. Mrs. Gallagher (teacher) told the board the ambassadors will help "set a welcoming tone for our visitors" and serve as peer role models.
Several student ambassadors spoke to the board about their roles. Leah said she would be a good ambassador because she is "kind and a good listener," and Gabby said she helps new students by "helping them with their work" and playing with them at recess. The students cited activities such as PBIS, library and art as parts of what helps new students feel welcome.
The assistant superintendent noted the district has more than 200 new students this school year, including 84 open‑enrollment students, and thanked staff for supporting the program. Board members praised the initiative and encouraged community attendance at related events, including the Brooklyn Early Childhood and Family Resource Center opening on Oct. 4.
What happens next: staff will continue mentoring ambassadors and present more detail in November during the academic year‑end review, as noted by district administrators.
