Alexander Board considers revision to expulsion policy and adopts ODE special-education model policies

The Alexander Board of Education at its November meeting conducted a first reading of proposed revisions to the district’s expulsion policy and approved the adoption of model special-education policies recommended by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.
During the first reading a district official explained that the proposed change would allow the board or administration to set parameters and conditions a student must meet before re-enrollment, rather than automatically returning a student after an 80-day expulsion period. The official framed the amendment as adding latitude to assess necessary supports and safeguards before a student returns. A board member clarified that the intent is to require completion of specified parameters during the expulsion period before reenrollment is permitted.
Separately, the board voted to adopt the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce special-education model policies and a suite of policies recommended by the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA). Board members were advised that more policy updates are expected to come forward for review in subsequent meetings.
