Multiple speakers at the Utica board's Aug. 12 meeting urged trustees to appoint Carvan Brazier as the next varsity coach, emphasizing community ties and student development beyond athletics.
"I think he's the right person for that job," said Julian Bostick, a public commenter who told the board Brazier "relates to the kids as far as music, fashion... how to carry themselves" and that Brazier's mentoring is "bigger than sports." Bostick said the coach understands students' lives and can influence college and life outcomes.
Anthony Lee, who said he coaches at the Youth Academy of Science, said the district needs coaches who are educators first and argued Brazier fits that description. "He's gonna be there for those kids," Lee said.
Franklin Davis, who said he investigated past coaching hiring practices, pressed the board to apply established rules consistently: if Brazier is the most senior and qualified candidate, "he should get the job," Davis said, and asked the board to explain if that does not happen.
Victor Ross and Michael Fenmore echoed support, describing Brazier's impact on students and the community and urging trustees to consider his qualifications.
Board response: Trustees thanked speakers and noted the public comments will be part of the personnel consideration. No formal personnel vote or final hiring action was recorded during the meeting.
