Principal Tracy says School 16 raised math proficiency to 66% and outlines programs to sustain growth

Principal Tracy, principal of School 16, told the Troy City School District board on Oct. 16 that the school saw notable gains in math and outlined a package of instructional and social-emotional supports intended to sustain further improvement.
"Sixty-six percent of our kids were proficient in math," Tracy said, citing classroom- and grade-level results including one teacher’s class at about 79% proficiency. Tracy credited a mix of data-driven instruction, a co-teach model with two teachers in certain classrooms, and full-time k–5 content specialists in ELA and math who follow cohorts from year to year.
The presentation detailed targeted interventions: an after-school ELA and math enrichment program for grades 3–5 taught by grade-level teachers in small groups; a “math bridge” block to revisit concepts before math instruction; and district mentor, targeted group instruction. Tracy said the school runs a Stronger Connections mentoring program with 54 students matched to nine staff for 20-minute mentoring sessions during lunch or after school.
Tracy also described ongoing equity work and restorative practices. Staff completed training with restorative-practices facilitator Lori DiCarlo; restorative circles are used at staff meetings and in student gatherings, and monthly professional development will continue from September through June. Tracy said the district is tracking referrals and suspensions for minority male students and seeking to lower disciplinary referrals while monitoring academic progress for that group.
Looking ahead, Tracy said School 16 plans to visit an existing Blue Ribbon school to study practices and keep pushing academic targets. The presentation closed with an invitation to families to attend PTA events, fall festival and other activities that showcase school culture outside the classroom.
The board acknowledged the presentation with praise and brief questions; no formal action was taken on the presentation itself.
