Syosset board honors winter athletes; teams notch county and Long Island titles

At a special Syosset Central School District Board of Education meeting, the district recognized dozens of winter student‑athletes and coaches for team and individual achievements.
Director of Athletics Scott Stuber told the board the district’s teams had another strong season, noting six Nassau County championships and three Long Island championships. He said the district’s athletic programs earned the NYS scholar‑athlete distinction for the third consecutive year, which the presentation defined as 75% or more of a roster holding an overall average of 90 or better.
Stuber introduced individual honorees including Jaden Ng (boys bowling), who rolled two 300 games and finished runner‑up in the Nassau County individual championship; Leila Abraham from the girls basketball team; and others. Boys basketball coach Greg Cardona recognized Thomas Martelli as an all‑county player and noted Martelli averaged 17 points per game this season.
Coach Mike Cipollino and coach Mark Acuto were introduced to represent boys swimming and diving. Cipollino said the boys roster included 44 swimmers and divers and listed a run of accomplishments: tenth consecutive conference/division championships, defended Long Island Challenge title, a second straight county championship and tying the Nassau County record for consecutive dual‑meet wins at 88. He named several all‑county and all‑state swimmers.
Gymnastics coach Steve Salippo and fencing coaches PJ Moon and Amanda Vatici were also introduced; coaches thanked families and listed team and individual honors, including county and Long Island champions and individual all‑county recipients.
No contest or disciplinary matters were raised during recognitions; the presentations were ceremonial and the board offered congratulations before moving to the SCIO Inspire curriculum presentation.
