Suffern robotics team showcases robot design, wins Inspire award and heads to state competition

Members of Suffern High School's FIRST Tech Challenge team 7486 on Wednesday detailed the design and outreach work that helped them qualify for the state competition in Utica.
"We won the Inspire award, which is the highest level award a team can win at one of these qualifiers," team members said, describing the honor that qualified them for the state championship.
Co-captains Sarah Joseph and Ethan Leoni and teammates Braden Gutterman and Ayushu Murathura walked the board through the robot's key features: a spindexer that sorts balls by color into the launcher, a 3D-printed launcher mounted on a turret offering about 120 degrees of aiming, a lift system that raises the robot for additional endgame points, and programming that includes a color sensor, PID control and a 30-second autonomous routine.
The students emphasized outreach: they run tech-help workshops at the Suffern Free Library for seniors, mentor middle-school teams, host Girl Scout workshops and run a community day funded in part by the alumni association. McCahill and the superintendent praised the students as ambassadors for the district and invited the team and advisors forward for a photograph.
Next steps: the team will compete at the state championship in Utica in March. The presentation was included in the superintendent's report and did not require board action.
