Sodus board swears in members, names Jason Walters president and Jeff Martinez vice president

The Sodus Central School District Board of Education opened its July meeting with oaths of office for newly elected and returning members and then elected its leadership for the coming year.

Brian Weidner, Eric Buttinger, Kelly De Marie and Jim Surgeon each took the Oath of Office to support the U.S. and New York constitutions and to “faithfully discharge the duties” of board members for their stated terms. The board then nominated and confirmed Jason Walters as president; Walters took the president’s oath for a term beginning 07/11/2024. Jeff Martinez was confirmed and sworn in as vice president for the 07/11/2024–07/10/2025 term.

President Walters led the board through a series of routine items: approving appointments, designations and authorizations; assigning members to committees including BOCES liaison duties, audit, scholarships, facilities and the district wellness committee; and confirming committee memberships by voice vote. The board recorded votes on those motions as “Aye” and carried the items as presented.

The meeting also included the administration of the superintendent’s oath to Nelson Kice and a discussion of upcoming calendar dates and special meetings. No controversial policy votes were taken during the leadership and appointment portion of the meeting.

The board moved from oath administration and appointments into the regular agenda, which included presentations on student assessment data and a community service award presentation.
