Residents press Marion and Williamson boards for transparency, academic metrics and outside technical expertise

Several residents used the meeting's public‑comment period to press the Marion and Williamson boards for clearer study scope and more transparent community engagement.
"I'm on the fence about this whole thing," said Stephanie (Speaker 15) of Williamson, who asked how the study will ensure improved academic proficiency and how community input would be guaranteed. "The biggest thing of all for me is how do you ensure it's better? How do you specifically [improve] academic proficiencies?" she asked.
Other commenters recommended adding external technical experts to feasibility teams. "I would have thought that team members of this feasibility study would have as an example a financial expert... a transportation expert... a facilities expert," said Greg Palace (Speaker 16), who urged objective, non‑partisan analyses of district debt service, staffing and campus suitability.
Craig Fenn (Speaker 17) said prior communications left questions unanswered and recommended roundtable forums for real‑time answers. "There needs to be open dialogue going forward," he said, noting several previously submitted questions were not answered in a memo distributed after the last meeting.
Andy Sauer (Speaker 6) encouraged boards to scope the feasibility study to protect local priorities. "If you tell them to leave no stone unturned, they will," he said, and recommended focusing the study on the strengths community members want to preserve.
Joanne Weinschneider (Speaker 18) urged board members to examine vendor deliverables carefully and to ask for exemplar districts that completed the process successfully; Emily Maynard (Speaker 14) suggested the board ask members to reflect publicly on why they joined the board and what goals they want to protect.
The boards heard these concerns and later entered an executive session; when they reconvened they announced they would not select a vendor at the meeting and would continue deliberations.
