Board honors dozens of seniors, BOCES completers and a lunch monitor who saved a choking student

The Shoreham‑Wading River board recognized valedictorian and salutatorian, multiple AP Scholars and BOCES certificate completers, Seal of Biliteracy and Civic Readiness recipients, spring athletic awards, and commended a lunch monitor for saving a choking second grader.
At its regular meeting the Shoreham‑Wading River Central School District Board of Education presented a slate of student and staff recognitions across grade levels.
Principal Frank Palazzi and Superintendent Gerard Poole led academic recognitions at the high school: Yia Hu was named valedictorian and will attend Yale University; Karen Maguire is salutatorian and will attend the University of Virginia. The board recognized 19 AP Scholars, four AP Scholars with Honor and 14 AP Scholars with Distinction; a list of named students was read aloud. Principal Palazzi also recognized 18 BOCES certificate completers across programs such as aviation, cosmetology, electrical trades and culinary arts, and named 47 seniors who maintained a weighted cumulative GPA of 95 or higher through the second marking period.
The board also presented New York State Seals of Biliteracy and Civic Readiness. A district presenter (Miss Wollbarrow) explained the criteria for each seal and handed medallions and certificates to recipients, naming students who qualified in both Spanish and English and listing civic project awardees.
Claudia Smith, principal of Miller Avenue, praised lunch monitor Colleen Miller for performing the Heimlich maneuver when a second grader began choking; Smith said the child was unharmed and asked the audience to thank Miller for her quick action.
Athletic recognitions included scholar‑athlete team GPAs (boys tennis 96.66, girls lacrosse 96.48, among others) and individual seasonal awards across spring sports. Several athletes were singled out for all‑league, all‑county and all‑state honors.
The board presented certificates to the district's three ex officio student trustees (Nicholas, Jocelyn Nastasi, and Caitlin) in recognition of their service.
The recognitions consumed much of the public meeting; no substantive policy votes were taken in the public portion immediately after the awards.
