Votes at a glance: Salem Central School District approves personnel moves, retiree payouts and policy adoption

At a special meeting the SALEM CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT Board of Education approved a set of routine personnel and fiscal items and adopted a new student electronic devices policy.

Personnel and finance votes - The board accepted the resignation of Bridal Thomas, speech therapist, effective 08/31/2025. Motion carried unanimously. - The board appointed Jane Laurie as a long-term elementary substitute effective 08/13/2025 at a per-diem rate based on step 1 of the WADA contract. Motion carried unanimously. - The board appointed Heidi Peterson, who holds an internship certificate in students with disabilities, to a probationary special education teacher appointment beginning 08/13/2025 with an anticipated end date of 08/12/2029; salary to be based on step 1. Board members discussed that Miss Peterson is completing her program and will hold the appropriate certificate shortly. Motion carried unanimously. - The board authorized sick-day payouts for 2024–25 retirees to be paid from the employee benefits and accrued liabilities reserve (account 867); administrators explained reserves are designed to be used and replenished and that the practice is consistent with audit expectations. Motion carried unanimously.

Policy vote - The board waived the second reading and adopted Policy 7316, Use of Electronic Devices During the School Day, with corrections for typographical errors. Administrators said a state timeline tied to funding required timely adoption. Building-level implementation, communications and a Q&A will be developed and shared before school begins.

The board moved to adjourn the special meeting after completing the agenda.
