The Salem Central School District Board on June 21 approved a renewal of a modified girls' soccer merger with neighboring Cambridge but tabled a proposed three‑district field‑hockey merger after extended public comment and board debate.
Coach Stacy (Speaker 4), who said she has coached in the district for nearly 20 seasons, urged the board to delay final decisions and include local coaches in merger discussions. “I have literally lived every day of my life as a coach… I would like to be a part of future conversations,” she said in an emotional public comment, asking the board to allow time for recruitment before locking in a merger.
Several residents, including new district resident Dave McFarland, echoed that plea and asked the board to wait up to 10 days after the modified season begins to see whether teams can be filled. McFarland said he wanted the district to “delay the vote, just see if we can fill a team.”
Board members debated competing priorities: ensuring students have safe opportunities to participate this fall versus preserving working relationships and a level playing field with neighboring districts. District officials noted tight entry deadlines for interscholastic competition (the board discussed dates such as June 1 and other sport‑specific deadlines) and transportation/logistics constraints that make late changes difficult.
On the dais, trustees approved the girls' modified soccer renewal with a recorded motion and vote. By contrast, after extended discussion about coaching involvement, culture questions and short timelines, the board voted 4–1 to table the field‑hockey merger discussion until the next meeting so subcommittees and coaches could further evaluate options.
What’s next: The girls' modified soccer merger is renewed for the upcoming season; the field‑hockey proposal remains unresolved and will return to the board after additional outreach and subcommittee work. The board said it will aim to preserve playing opportunities while ensuring coach participation and equitable treatment across partner districts.
