Pleasantville Hiawatha Lodge donates to cover student debts across schools

At the Nov. 4 Pleasantville Board of Education meeting, Tony Burton, head of the charitable committee for the Pleasantville Hiawatha Lodge No. 434, presented a donation to the district aimed at covering outstanding student debts across the district’s three schools.
"It was unanimously passed to, to write a check to cover that debt for those children hoping to ease that burden from them," Burton said as he handed a ceremonial check to district leaders. He described the lodge’s local charitable work and encouraged community members to support annual activities such as the lodge’s Christmas-tree sale.
Board members thanked Burton and noted the donation aligns with the district’s community partnerships. The superintendent acknowledged the organization and accepted the gift during the meeting; the donation was listed to be approved as part of the consent agenda, which the board later approved by voice vote.
The lodge’s contribution was presented publicly to highlight community support for students facing financial hardship; district officials said they appreciate partners that help reduce nonacademic barriers to student participation.
