High school radio club urges board to restore aide coverage and airtime

Three students representing the Plainview Bethpage High School radio club told the board they are struggling to operate the station because the full-time aide who previously staffed the radio room was not replaced.
"My name is Atan Bennett, and I'm joined here with Alana Mitnick and Daniel Richmond. We are here on behalf of the radio club in the high school to discuss recent issues regarding the functioning of the radio and the future of the program," Atan Bennett (speaker 13) told the board. Students said current policy requires an adult in the room for students to broadcast; with no aide replacement, the only reliable access for student airtime is during tenth period four days a week, leaving many members unable to participate. The students said the club has more than 40 members and that the adviser, "Miss Barry," has been holding on-air periods when available but that approach is not sustainable.
The chair thanked the students for presenting professionally and asked the district clerk to collect contact information. The chair said the administration (Doctor O'Mara as referenced) would reach out to the students in the next day or two to discuss solutions.
The board closed the public-comment period after additional speakers (including a community member who raised accessibility of online materials) spoke; the meeting then moved to routine and new-business votes.
