Board hears capital-project update: stadium lights up, turf and asphalt schedules set

Contractors Michael Jordan and Billy Bing gave the board a construction update on the district’s capital project, reporting several turning points for the athletic facilities and school spaces.

Billy Bing told the board that metal-stud framing is under way and that new concession and art-room areas are on schedule for turnover on Sept. 1. He said the wood and metal shops, along with associated bid documents for those spaces, are on track for completion of bid documents in December and that team rooms under construction are expected to turn over in late November. On the stadium, Bing said “new stadium lights went up today,” that turf installation is scheduled to begin next Monday and that asphalt work is planned for June 30; he added the project team expects the field to be playable by Sept. 1.

The presenters addressed community concerns about a large soil pile adjacent to the field. Bing said the dirt is “not contaminated soil,” adding “there’s no carcinogens in the soil. It is a pile of dirt.” He said the material lacks structural properties and the team is evaluating how much can be reused within the site footprint; if excess remains they will seek places to relocate it and consult community partners on potential reuse.

Presenters also flagged a possible brief delay for countertops and cabinets caused by supplier procurement issues, saying teachers may need to shift rooms for a few days when the school year begins while casework is installed. Board members asked for drawings related to potential berms and landscaping and were told the design team will confirm quantities and placement before any reuse or regrading takes place.

Contractors concluded the update by saying the project remains generally on schedule, with a few small materials risks that could cause short, localized workarounds but not major schedule changes.
