Millbrook Minute: Student honors, spirit week and community events highlighted

Millbrook Central School District’s weekly Millbrook Minute shared a series of school and community announcements, including student honors, spirit-week activities and several upcoming events.

Superintendent Hernandez and high school staff announced that four Millbrook High School students placed in the LaGrange Historical Society essay contest recognizing the American Revolution. George Wade, president of the LaGrange Historical Society and LaGrange town historian, visited to celebrate the winners: Magdalena Luckel (first), Madelyn Sumloff (second), Pim Glasson (third) and Evie Lewis (fourth).

High school staff also recapped spirit-week activities, noting a pep rally and the varsity football team’s upset win over the second-ranked Pauling High School. The homecoming dance is scheduled for the evening (6:30–9:30 p.m.); tickets are $15 at the door.

Middle school updates included an internet-safety presentation by Thomas Grimes (identified as working with New York’s law-enforcement) and participation in homecoming events. Middle-school staff praised student behavior and school spirit.

Elementary- and district-level staff reported on assemblies and family-focused programs: a Ned’s Mindset assembly (funded in part by a PTO YoYo sale) that emphasized perseverance and support, reminders about Halloween parade consent forms for Oct. 31, and guidance on costumes (no masks or toy weapons).

The district office reported staff crisis-prevention training for nearly 30 staff members with an in-person follow-up planned for Nov. 4, and said 53 staff members are certified in CPR and AED. An informational session for families associated with the E and L department is planned for Nov. 13.

In curriculum news, Dr. Watkins announced a Sky Schools breath-work and wellness presentation on Oct. 27 (6:00–7:30 p.m.) at the high school auditorium and promoted the Millbrook Listening Project, a yearlong community listening campaign run with the village of Millbrook and the Town of Washington seeking student participants for community service hours.

Superintendent Hernandez closed with regional opportunities: a skilled trades fair on Oct. 23 at Red Hook High School (free and open to the public) hosted with Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino and State Senator Michelle Hinchey, and a College Planning 101 session on Nov. 5 with Stephanie Morrow.
