Marcellus celebrates students earning Seal of Biliteracy; teachers highlighted program growth

The Marcellus Central School District Board of Education recognized 17 students awarded the Seal of Biliteracy and heard short student presentations in Spanish and French during the June 17 meeting.
Brian Seavey introduced the recipients and described the Seal as a state designation awarded at graduation to students who demonstrate proficiency in English and a second language. He described the student presentations as demanding (10–15 minutes before a panel of world-language teachers and other professionals) and praised the students’ performance.
World-language teachers and staff members echoed that the students 'shine' in Spanish and French and noted the program’s growth through classroom instruction and extracurricular support. A student presenter gave a short snapshot of her full presentation; teachers said these snapshots include a question-and-answer period in the target language.
Why it matters: The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes language proficiency and supports the district’s world-language offerings; staff said other districts reach out about Marcellus’s independent-study and language practices.
Next steps: The students will wear Seal of Biliteracy medals at graduation and the district will continue to showcase student work in world-language programs.
