Wilmington supervisor urges Lake Placid Central School District to formalize Camp Placid access for Wilmington students

Favor Smith, supervisor for the Town of Wilmington, told the Lake Placid Central School District board during public comment that North Elba recently adopted a stricter residency/work rule for its Camp Placid summer program that left some Wilmington children excluded and waitlisted.
"If there's a kid in the Lake Placid Central School District who happens to reside in Wilmington, it shouldn't be that hard for them to get into a summer program," Smith said, urging the board to adopt a policy or formal arrangement to ensure district students can participate when school facilities are used.
Smith said Wilmington officials had discussed covering fees for the small number of affected children and that North Elba had begun to allow some Wilmington children back into the program after local outreach. The board confirmed that the children in question are district students and noted that the district provides summer-program facilities and food, which creates leverage to influence access policies.
Board members and the superintendent discussed practical next steps: the superintendent noted the summer program will be located at the middle/high school and uses the gym, cafeteria and district transportation and food services, which the board could factor into an access policy. No formal policy was adopted at the meeting; the issue was raised for future consideration and monitoring.
The public comment came during the board's designated public participation period; the board's organizational meeting is scheduled for July 14, when incoming members will be seated and the board could revisit district-level policies affecting shared-use summer programs.
