Committee discusses drafting facility-naming policy and flags several outdated policies for deletion

The policy committee discussed whether the district needs a formal process for naming facilities and spaces and reviewed a package of old policies for possible deletion or revision.

Members agreed the district should draft a naming policy that clarifies which kinds of spaces are eligible (libraries, gyms, fields, new STEM wing), whether honorees must be deceased or qualified in other ways, the duration of a name assignment, and whether naming could be tied to financial contributions. The chair suggested drafting a policy based on a model the committee favors, circulating a Google Doc for wordsmithing and targeting a January full-board meeting for discussion.

Separately, the committee reviewed several outdated policies that frequently duplicate more current policy language or reference obsolete procedures. They identified Policy 5601-P (school lunch procedure) and earlier policies on damage to property (dating to the 1970s) as candidates for deletion or rewrite. Members agreed to consult counsel about statutory or procedural requirements (for example, the district’s obligations under the National School Lunch Act) and to present specific recommendations to the board for formal action.

No deletions were finalized at the meeting. The committee will prepare draft policy language and proposed deletions for the December/January meeting cycle and work with school-level staff (including librarians and principals) to refine proposed language where necessary.
