Ithaca officials outline recruitment strategy to address teacher shortages

Ithaca City School District staff on Monday outlined a multi-pronged recruitment strategy aimed at easing teacher shortages in high-need areas such as special education and STEM, while flagging pay and certification barriers that could limit how quickly new hires can be recruited and retained.

In a work-session presentation, Zach (S3), the district presenter leading the hiring update, told the board that national teacher turnover spiked near 10% in 2022–23 and remains above long-term norms, and that the district faces local challenges because Ithaca is geographically isolated and competes with nearby colleges and regional districts for candidates. "We were hitting about 10% turnover, nationwide in 2022–23," Zach said, adding that the district is still slightly above the historical norm.
