Sophie Spamberg, an Interact Club student, told the Lake Placid Central School District meeting about club membership, community partnerships, recent drives that collected seven units of blood, and an upcoming Red Cross drive with a scholarship incentive.
Sophie Spamberg, a student presenter with the Interact Club, told the Lake Placid Central School District meeting about the club’s volunteer work, recent fundraising and recruitment efforts.
The club currently lists 6 freshmen, 5 sophomores, 13 juniors and 13 seniors, Spamberg said, and she named student officers including president Fiona Sullivan, Donna Perez, vice president Ireland Caskey and Rowan Mather, and treasurer Brookmeyer. "We have definitely built this program up a lot," she said, describing how membership grows as students advance through high school.
Spamberg reviewed this year’s activities — locker day, a dam duck race, a teddy bear picnic, pumpkin decorating and two blood drives — and described partnerships with local organizations and staff. "This year, we collected seven units of blood for this drive," Spamberg said, noting college trips sometimes conflict with student availability. A staff member added that the club partners with local groups including Rotary and the town and helps package supplies with Roost for community events.
Officials said the American Red Cross drive is scheduled for March 20 and that 22 of 38 slots had been filled at the time of the meeting. The district’s presenter reported that if the drive collects 30 units, the Red Cross will award $500 in scholarships to Interact.
Members and staff highlighted the Teddy Bear Picnic as a signature event that brings small businesses, library activities, a "stuffy" donation table and other community partners together to benefit children and holiday donations. Spamberg also said a senior, Raquel, is planning a cultural fair as a capstone project and that the club will again host a park day with the Town of North Elba and engage the middle school Interact to recruit new members.
Chair (Speaker 2) praised the students’ work during the meeting, saying, "I think you do a great job." The board offered thanks and no formal action was required after the presentation.
