Superintendent highlights state proposals: free school meals and a revised temperature bill

The superintendent said Governor Hochul proposed funding free school breakfasts and lunches for all districts, which the superintendent said would feed about 2,700,000 students and eliminate the need for students to purchase meals at school. "That is wonderful news," the superintendent said.
On building conditions, the superintendent said state legislation signed by the governor and now subject to amendment would change a prior approach that might have prohibited occupancy of educational spaces at certain temperature thresholds. Under the pending amendment, districts would be required to develop policies that include plans to remove students and staff from those spaces "where practical," rather than an outright prohibition tied to an 88-degree threshold.
The superintendent urged the board and community to monitor how the legislation moves forward and noted staff would follow developments. The district will also participate in a school safety task force training on Jan. 30 in Albany to discuss managing anonymous threats and develop talking points for policymakers.
Board members asked for data about how often district spaces reach the referenced temperature threshold; the superintendent said specific temperature data were not currently available.
