District wins state grant for electric‑bus transition study; consultant to do on‑site analysis

The Greenville Central School District has secured a state grant to study a possible transition to electric buses, Superintendent Mike Bennett (speaker 2) said at the June 10 meeting.
Bennett said the vendor that assisted the district in writing and submitting the grant will perform the study, which will be fully funded by the grant. The consultant will collect operational data, work with district transportation staff (Mary and the garage), conduct on‑site observations and analyze routes to estimate vehicle counts, charging infrastructure needs and power‑service requirements.
"They'll take all that information and they'll be able to glean a really good idea of what we're currently doing," Bennett said, and the study will "put together a comprehensive report on what it could look like" for electric buses, including projected bus counts and charging‑station needs.
Bennett noted the study will require district staff time to provide route and operational data but said the grant covers the consultant’s work. Board members asked whether the vendor performing the study was also the firm that helped procure the grant; Bennett said yes and confirmed the grant funds the consultant's work. The board requested follow‑up about scope, staff time required, and next steps once the study report is complete.
Bennett also said statewide timelines for electrification remain in flux but that the district will use the study to inform any future procurement or infrastructure plans.
