District leaders presented a public summary and corrective-action plan on Sept. 25 following a chemical-lab spill and large evacuation at the high school earlier in the month.
Speaker 2 summarized findings from an investigation and a companion report: students had received safety training, external responders praised overall inventory management and routine equipment checks were in place, but the event exposed problems in on-the-ground incident command clarity, personal protective equipment usage in the lab, reunification of siblings and external communications.
The administrators said they will strengthen the chain-of-command practice required by state emergency plans and clarify the building incident commander role for the Farragut Complex. They noted that while goggles were worn by the teacher in the lab, other PPE use was inconsistent and that the state does not mandate PPE in all classroom settings; the district said it is consulting external experts and will consider changes that do not disrupt instruction.
District leaders also acknowledged that sibling reunification required faster targeted support because rumors spread among students and families while some siblings were at off-site locations. They said the district would not allow parental sign-outs during an emergency and would centralize reunification procedures. The report recommended at least several days of counseling follow-up for students and staff directly affected by the incident.
Administrators said Andy Clayman (incident commander for the Farragut Complex) and building response teams are implementing an 8-point action chart that assigns leads, target dates, and follow-up steps; the document and a more detailed report have been placed in the public record for review.
What happens next: The Farragut building response team will meet to start implementing the chart and report back to the board; the district said parents of affected families had been contacted and that counseling supports would continue.
