Board honors retirees, hears exchange-student presentation and Relay for Life report

The Greenville Central School District board opened its June 9 meeting by honoring a slate of retiring educators whose combined service the assistant superintendent said totals about 170 years.
Todd Hilgendorf led the recognitions and asked building administrators to introduce retirees. Mr. Urban described Karen Overbaugh’s 20 years supporting Ellis Elementary (substitute coordination, emergency drills, state testing logistics) and praised her leadership in the Greenville Paraprofessional Federation. Administrators also recognized Josephine (named in the transcript as Josephine Rupa) for 28 years, Elaine Ozowski (22 years) for her work as an aide, and other long-serving staff including Dina (29 years) and Tim Albright (21 years) for their contributions to student supports and extracurricular programs.
During the open forum Tanya Kirky (K–12 instructional technology specialist) and Brenda Schulz (representing the Greenville Faculty Association) reported on a Relay for Life event held at the high school that drew about 150 attendees and 13 teams, raising a little over $17,000 in donations; organizers said donations were still being collected.
Todd introduced Yo Nami, the district’s Rotary Youth Exchange student, who presented on her home town (Wakanwa, Japan), Japanese school customs (uniforms, cleaning routines), host families in Greenville and travel experiences in New York City and Washington, D.C. Yo Nami thanked the district and host families and said the exchange had been a life-changing experience.
The board expressed appreciation for the retirees’ service and for the community events that engaged students and staff. Administrators invited retirees to stay for the meeting or take pictures with staff following the recognitions.
Ending: The district will post the draft districtwide safety plan for public comment and has scheduled a public hearing on July 14 before final adoption.
