The Greenville Central School District Board spent an extended portion of its Sept. 15 meeting debating whether to install short-term window air conditioners in two new music rooms or to opt for a quieter split/modulated system as a longer-term solution.
"For me, honestly, I think the window units ... it's the wrong choice to put a window unit in those spaces," the facilities consultant, Jim, said, arguing that a split or modulated system would be quieter, more energy-efficient and would provide heating options that a window unit would not. Board members raised concerns about unintended consequences — specifically, whether the noise from window units would interfere with music instruction and whether the district would later spend additional funds to replace short-term fixes.
Facilities staff said window units had already been purchased for some rooms and that a temporary installation was feasible; they also said procurement and capital-project rules could affect timing and whether work had to proceed under the capital-project contract or as a separate later project. Members asked for hard data on decibel levels and for installation-cost estimates before committing to a particular option. Later in the meeting, Jim provided illustrative figures: window units in the relevant size range can produce roughly 58–70 decibels at full output, comparable to a running vacuum, while a split system can run in the high 20s to about 30 decibels at a 100% setting.
The board did not take a final vote on the equipment selection; members directed staff to gather noise measurements and cost figures and to consult with department stakeholders before the next decision point.
