Parents say early gym requests ignored as board readies rubric to prioritize district teams

She said the lack of access affects roughly 120 youth athletes and asked the board for a prompt written response and clear application of any new prioritization rules.
Why it matters: Organizers said in‑season, district programs are the pipeline for future modified JV and varsity teams and that limiting access pushes families to outside paid programs. Parents warned the current system — which many described as effectively first‑come, first‑served — has not protected in‑district teams.
What district staff proposed: Facilities staff said they are developing two documents — a gym‑use allocation procedure and a rubric to score and prioritize requests. The proposed priority levels were described as: (1) in‑district athletic teams in season, (2) youth community sports serving Greenville students in season, (3) club sports primarily serving Greenville youth, (4) adult recreation, and (5) outside commercial organizations, with points systems inside each priority tier to maximize equitable allocation.
Administrators noted operational constraints: Kayla (the scheduler) is on maternity leave; the facilities director said he wants to finalize the rubric with buildings & grounds staff and then publish dead‑lines and changes to the community so youth organizations can plan. The superintendent and facilities staff said they will seek to balance prior commitments with new priority rules so long‑standing reservations are not unfairly canceled without notice.
Next steps: Board members asked facilities staff to share the rubric and a timetable for implementation. Officials said they will solicit input from buildings & grounds and then provide the community with clear deadlines for future seasons. Ms. McEnany requested a written reply within a week describing what can be scheduled for Greenville Youth Basketball.
