After capital-project loss, Grand Island board endorses broader outreach and survey

Superintendent Dr. Graham told trustees the district has drafted a community feedback survey aimed at understanding why the recent capital project did not pass and to gather input before any future proposal. "We definitely wanna thank the community for coming out and voting," Dr. Graham said, adding that roughly 1,400 people voted "no" in the prior vote and that the survey could function as an "autopsy" on turnout and information gaps.
Trustees debated how best to reach residents who do not have children in the schools or who are not active on social media. Suggestions included traditional U.S. mailings with a return option, placing QR-code posters at municipal buildings and the library, offering paper pick-up and drop-off locations at district offices and libraries, and sending targeted emails to the district's distribution list.
Trustees emphasized concise explanatory material with the survey so respondents understand the project's scope and the district's reasoning. Board members also discussed the district's prior experience with social media for board communications and favored an informational-only approach if the board uses social platforms (no public comment threads).
The board asked staff to refine the survey, add clarifying illustrations or photos if helpful, and produce a distribution plan (including paper and digital options) for the upcoming budget season. Staff and communications personnel will report back with a finalized survey and a recommended outreach schedule.
