Eldred board outlines implementation steps for state-mandated student cell-phone ban

District staff outlined how the Eldred Central School District will implement the state-mandated student cell-phone ban that takes effect on Aug. 1.
"It is a state law, so we do not have really that choice unless we want to go without state aid," a staff member told the board, explaining the district's obligation to comply. She described outreach steps already taken: two letters to the community, virtual parent meetings scheduled for June 19, June 30, July 7, July 17 and July 24 (each starting at 6 p.m.), and invitations for parents to join an implementation committee focused on logistics rather than debating the law.
Staff described operational options the committee will study, including cell-phone pouches, cell-phone lockers, and how coaches and parents will remain able to communicate about schedule changes. The district also said it will update its student code of conduct to include consequences for violations and do work over the summer to ensure systems are in place by the Aug. 1 effective date.
The board did not provide a published enforcement rubric or a final decision on which storage option (pouches vs. lockers) will be adopted; staff said those are topics for the implementation committee to develop in the coming weeks.
