Superintendent highlights student achievements, ambassadors program and capital-project work

Superintendent Dr. Ziliak introduced two student representatives who presented recent accomplishments across athletics, music and service clubs. Student representatives detailed victories and recognitions, and one noted the unified program’s fundraising: "We raised $10,117, and over 30 students jumped into a freezing Lake Erie," the student representative said, describing proceeds given to the Western New York Special Olympics.
Administrators described other student activity highlights, including participation in CCMTA events, a mock-trial club, community-service projects (about 30 Thanksgiving meal boxes prepared by Interact) and upcoming visits and trips. Dr. Ziliak said the district is pleased with the engagement and recognized volunteer support from staff and community members.
The superintendent also reported on operations and planning. "Our phone system is wrapped up both in person and on paper," Dr. Ziliak said, describing completed installations and remaining paperwork to finalize finances and punch-list items. He previewed phase 1 of the capital project — work he said includes resurfacing the main campus track, installing two playgrounds at Wheelock and roof work at Wheelock and the maintenance building — and noted that bids were approved at a prior meeting.
On finances, Dr. Ziliak gave an early preview of the budget process and guiding principles for the coming year and reminded the board that the community will vote on the district budget in May. A committee member said the district is currently heavy on special-education annual reviews and is actively recruiting to fill three positions, noting specifically a school psychologist and a part-time speech therapist.
The board asked for additional detail on budget numbers at upcoming meetings; administrators said they will provide more fiscal detail and timelines in the weeks ahead.
