Fredonia board approves two tenure appointments and accepts two retirements

The Fredonia Central School Board on Feb. 10 approved tenure appointments for Cassandra Farrell and Alexandra Zoff and accepted two upcoming retirements.
Chair opened the personnel portion of the meeting and presented the superintendent’s recommendations. The board voted by voice to approve the recommendation that Cassandra Farrell be appointed to a tenure position in the school social work tenure area effective Feb. 27, 2026. Superintendent Dr. Ziliak praised Farrell’s work during the COVID period and her ongoing role supporting students and families: "Cassie came on board and delivered 100% in everything that she shared in her interview," he said. Board members noted her leadership of programs such as the buddy program and the backpack/holiday-gift efforts.
The board also approved tenure for Alexandra Zoff in the music tenure area, listed as effective Nov. 17, 2025. Administrators said Zoff has maintained high standards in the music program and supported younger musicians; Dr. Ziliak said the district looks for hires who will "maintain that level, really deliver quality instruction, build very positive relationships with our students".
Separately, the board accepted two retirements. The board approved, with regret, the retirement of Jill Putnam, elementary teacher, effective July 1, 2026, after 27 years of service. Members described Putnam as a creative, dedicated teacher who supported students through difficult circumstances and community activities. The board likewise accepted the retirement of Carol Zirkle, high school mathematics teacher, effective July 21, 2026, after 26 years of service; administrators credited Zirkle with strong Regents preparation and contributions to athletics and the unified program.
All personnel items were moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. The board did not provide a roll-call tally on the record. The approved tenure appointments become part of the district’s personnel roster and the district said it will proceed with staffing adjustments and searches as needed to fill future vacancies.
The board moved next into other business and later into executive session to discuss additional personnel matters.
