Board reviews student personal electronic devices policy tied to statewide cellphone directive

At the June 10 meeting, Superintendent de Tomaso told the board the policy committee met June 4 to draft a student personal electronic devices policy "in response" to a decision by Governor Hochul to ban cell phones in schools.
De Tomaso said the committee's master draft had been shared with stakeholders on June 9, including PTA representatives, students and administrators, and that the policy is posted for review and pending adoption. "This policy is up for reviewing pending adoption on this agenda and will be posted on the district website," he said. The superintendent said the district intends the policy to be in place for the 2025-26 school year.
The chair also listed other policies under review: student harassment and bullying prevention and intervention (Policy 0115), ex officio student member of the board (Policy 2245), attendance area (Policy 5110), student voter preregistration and registration (Policy 5605), school safety plans and teams and an artificial intelligence policy (Policy 8636) that is being reviewed.
No formal vote on the student-device policy was recorded in the transcript; it appeared on the agenda for further review and possible adoption at a future meeting.
