East Rockaway board adopts student-harassment, voter preregistration and school-safety policies; superintendent highlights 100% graduation rate

At the July 8 meeting the East Rockaway Board of Education moved to rescind Policy 0105 and adopted multiple policies presented on the agenda: Policy 0115 (student harassment and bullying prevention and intervention), Policy 2245 (ex officio student member of the board), Policy 5110 (attendance area), Policy 5605 (student voter preregistration and registration), and Policy 8130 (school safety plans and teams). The meeting record shows motions and seconds for the adoptions and approval by voice vote; the transcript lists the mover for rescind and adoption motions using the names given in the record (for example, "motion by mister Dolores" with a second "by missus Doyle" for the adoption motion).
The board also noted one policy (5695) was listed for review pending adoption and that two policies, an artificial-intelligence policy and another policy regarding the ex officio student member, remain under review. Trustees asked no substantive questions on the adopted policies during this meeting.
In his superintendent report, Mr. De Tomaso recognized graduates and the moving-up ceremonies and said the district has achieved a 100% graduation rate for the third consecutive year. He reported the district's summer boost program started its first day with "over 100 students registered." He also provided facility updates: the district is replacing lighting through an energy performance contract to improve efficiency (including motion-activated hallway lighting), a new boiler system is being installed, and work on the Cupola project is pending signature of the contract and delivery of materials.
Board members offered condolences to staff families and congratulations on recent births, and there were no public speakers during the public comment period. The board adjourned the public session at 6:01 p.m. and entered executive session to discuss contract negotiations.
