The East Rockaway Union Free School District Board of Education on July 8 approved a resolution appointing Sofia Verkhoff as the district's student ex officio member for the 2025-26 school year, a one-year term running from July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026. The board noted the appointee will have the right to attend regular board meetings, participate in discussions and offer recommendations but will not have the right to vote or to attend executive sessions.
"I will both faithfully discharge the duties of student ex officio member for the East Rockaway district according to the best [of my] ability," the student recited as part of the oath administered at the meeting. The superintendent introduced the student and cited her leadership, community volunteer work and advanced coursework; the superintendent said the district will provide training on board procedures and resources for the role.
Board members moved and seconded the resolution; the record shows the motion was made and seconded (the transcript identifies the mover as "mister Salute" and the second as "mister Boyle") and the motion passed by voice vote. The board also discussed that the student may serve on district committees if she chooses and that the district will extend opportunities for committee participation.
The introduction followed state-level changes requiring student representation on school boards across New York State, which the superintendent referenced in the meeting as a law enacted under Governor Hochul. The district said it will provide orientation and procedural training to the student member and will invite her to committee meetings as appropriate.
The board will reconvene regular business and continue its agenda after the oath and welcome.
