Board hears FEMA timeline, reviews Ralph Askins entryway plans and school security upgrades

Facilities and transportation staff circulated architectural sketches for a proposed entryway at Ralph Askins and asked the board for input on the general scheme. Staff said they could contract a firm to produce formal drawings, with draft completion by Christmas and a planned bid period at the start of the year so construction could begin next summer.
Staff also reported two conversations with FEMA that have been "productive," and said FEMA indicated the district is more likely than not to receive progress or an answer by Halloween. Staff said FEMA asked to use the district's prior grant application as a template to help other communities, and the district agreed to permit that with conditions to prevent any unfair priority advantage.
On operations, staff reported that portable classrooms are being deconstructed in pieces and materials must be sorted for disposal at the dump, extending the timeline for removal. The facilities update also noted the district added parking to support SROs and that some work (for example, fire-lane striping by American Stripers) is being processed for insurance reimbursement.
Separately, the technology department reported a systemwide refresh: every teacher received a laptop and a new monitor to allow flexible classroom configurations; an audio enhancement system was installed in the cosmetology room at the high school; and the middle school will receive an Avigilon door-swipe at a backdoor to ease staff access and enhance security.
A city representative told the board the city is exploring building-wide security improvements and has been coordinating with district staff; the city said it may contribute to measures that would benefit both city tenants and the schools.
Officials did not take a formal vote on contracting for the Ralph Askins drawings during this meeting; staff asked for board input and said they would proceed based on that feedback and bring formal steps back as needed.
