School board approves local drone-use policy and family-leave rule

The Fayetteville City School Board approved multiple committee-recommended policies at its regular March meeting, including a new policy regulating unmanned aircraft systems on or near school property and an update to its family and medical leave policy. The approvals were taken by voice vote after committee reports and brief discussion.

The board voted to adopt policy 3.219, titled "Use of unmanned aircraft systems on 1st Street," on first reading. Miss Jean, presenting the insurance and policy committee's recommendations, introduced the measure; the chair praised the committee for tailoring the policy to local needs, saying he "appreciate[d] y'all spending a good amount of time trying to perfect it and tailor it to Fayetteville." The board proceeded with the voice vote and the motion carried.

The board also approved policy 5.305, "Family and medical leave," on first reading after a motion and second from committee members. Miss Jean stated the committee had reviewed a set of policies (2.1—2.9) and recommended approval with one exception (policy 2.4) sent back for further review. The motions were seconded and approved by voice votes.

The policies were presented as committee recommendations and the board did not amend them on the floor. The committee materials and the first-pass approvals mean the policies will be recorded in board minutes and followed by any required second-reading or implementation steps specified in district procedure.

Next steps: Committee materials will be retained as part of the record and any items designated for further review (for example policy 2.4) will return to the committee before subsequent board consideration.
