Board hears financial report, approves policy changes to test weight, and reviews multiple consent items

Staff member (S2) reported the district closed its fiscal year and placed more than $2,000,000 back into the fund balance, a result the speaker credited to staff efforts and favorable conditions. “This is the first time since I’ve been here, we put $2,000,000 plus back in the fund balance,” Staff member (S2) said, adding that monthly expenditure reports will allow the board to track spending moving forward.
During the consent agenda, the chair read multiple personnel recommendations: hires for several elementary head coaches and cheer coaches contingent on successful background checks and drug testing, plus approvals of overnight and out-of-state student trips including the CCHS FFA National Convention in Indianapolis and other leadership and hospitality trips.
On policy, Staff member (S3) explained three recommended revisions: updating officer-election language to include a legislative representative, conforming grading policy to a new law that prohibits grades below zero, and adopting the new cap that end-of-course/TCAP tests may count for no more than 15% of a student’s final grade. Staff member (S3) said principals recommended setting the test-weight cap at the maximum allowed 15% for elementary, middle and high schools.
Board members asked clarifying questions about these items. The packet contained the revisions and documentation; staff indicated the policies will be brought forward for formal adoption according to the board’s standard process.
The board was also notified of a remaining ISM grant balance and asked to approve the budget items before spending those funds. A staff member reported streaming problems with the meeting, noting it was recording and that the recording would be posted when available.
The board reminded attendees that the next meeting time was changed to Thursday at 5 p.m. at Cannon County Elementary/Middle School.
Next steps: staff to provide monthly financial reports and to return policy changes for formal approval as required by board procedure.
