Resident urges Easton School District to link strategic plan with county sub-area plan and involve students

A resident who has been facilitating monthly community gatherings urged the Easton School District board to ensure the district’s strategic plan connects to the county’s forthcoming sub-area plan and to involve students directly in that planning.
The commenter said the sub-area plan is broader than zoning and includes growth management, housing, transportation and retail, and stressed that youth perspectives should be included when the county’s consultant meets with the community. “I’ve asked them to look at how youth can give input into the sub area plan,” the resident said, adding that students and leadership development should be a central part of the effort.
The resident described the plan as a long-term (20-year) effort and said Easton has tried similar efforts in the past that did not proceed; she said the county is now funding a consultant who will develop the sub-area piece of a larger comprehensive plan. She asked the district to send representatives to community meetings so the school and community planning efforts align.
She also raised local environmental and safety concerns tied to recent studies and a privacy fence the district installed for what she described as biohazard issues, and offered to help draft letters the board might send to legislators or other bodies. The resident told board members when her community meetings are held and encouraged the board to attend.
The superintendent said the district will share strategic-plan survey results with the board next month and acknowledged about 50 survey responses have been received so far. The superintendent and the resident also discussed possible career-education connections: the resident said she serves on the countywide career and technical education advisory committee and offered to help arrange career speakers and career-day activities for the school.
The comment concluded with a request for clearer outreach: the resident said Easton community members had not been invited to conversations about a proposed public facilities district and asked for better communication if regional projects could affect Easton students’ access to new facilities.
The board will receive the superintendent’s compiled survey trends next month and invited the community to continue contributing input through the district’s established channels.
