District outlines Safe Schools plan, visitor ID checks and monthly drills

Presenters said the district will coordinate monthly drills with local law enforcement and post classroom and building posters explaining the protocol. They described a visitor entry process in which visitors press a doorbell, show a photo ID to an office staffer, and receive a printed visitor badge. A scanning device is planned to check IDs against a screening list and to alert staff if an individual flags a concern; staff will use discretion if the scan returns a hit and will make a local determination about building access.
On lockdown procedures, presenters emphasized students will not be allowed to enter the building during a lockdown to retrieve children; "We're not gonna let them in the doors," a presenter said, noting that the policy is intended to secure students during an incident and not to be a barrier for family engagement at other times.
The district also stressed that drills should be pre‑taught, particularly for younger students, so that students know what actions to take rather than being surprised by an unannounced drill. The plan calls for ID badges for staff, visitor badges for guests, monthly drills consistent with the I Love You Guys Foundation's standard response protocol, and ongoing communication with families about what to expect during incidents and reunification.
Board members raised implementation questions—how photo IDs will be scanned, how volunteers and regular visitors will be handled, and whether the system will create barriers for parents without picture ID. Presenters said they will create accommodations and safe workflows for parents without picture ID and reiterated the district’s intent to balance safety with community access.
What’s next: Staff will continue training, refine procedures for passing times and large events, and provide parent guidance materials explaining the protocols.
