Board approves K–5 Amplify CKLA pilot at Coupeville Elementary

The Coupeville School District Board on Aug. 28 voted to approve a K–5 pilot of the Amplify CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) curriculum at Coupeville Elementary.
Principal Nicole McColl told the board the pilot responds to an urgent instructional gap: the district’s existing Journeys curriculum is out of print and, in teachers’ experience, lacked alignment to state standards. McColl said her team reviewed multiple ELA programs, including Wonders and CKLA, and chose CKLA because it integrates structured‑literacy practices (including phonics) and aligns with the district’s Orton‑Gillingham training for struggling readers.
The pilot will run for a full academic year at the entire elementary building (K–5) rather than a single grade. The principal described a yearlong implementation plan that includes ongoing professional development and coaching from Amplify reps, peer observations, baseline data collection (DIBELS, i‑Ready and prior SBA where applicable), and frequent monitoring. The elementary building budget will cover roughly half the purchase cost for pilot materials; the district will fund the remainder.
"The administration recommends approval of the CKLA Amplify ELA curriculum pilot for K–5," Principal McColl told the board during her presentation.
District staff stressed that the pilot is intended to produce data and learning across one full year; at the end of the year the Instructional Materials Committee (IMC) will review results and recommend whether to adopt CKLA districtwide. The board approved the pilot by motion and voice vote.
What’s next: Implementation will include set‑up (student rostering, Clever/CSS integration), PD and an end‑of‑year IMC presentation with SBA and other assessment results to inform any adoption decision.
