Summary
District facilities staff told the committee that the district largely meets Agency of Education facilities standards (operations manual, capital improvement planning, emergency operations and security), with some documentation and reunification exercises still in progress.
Barre Unified Union School District #97 staff told the Facilities Committee that the district's facilities are generally "proficient" under the Agency of Education's July 2025 facility standards, while noting work remains to document some plans and exercise reunification procedures.
"We have an operations and maintenance manual now that's been crafted," Jamie told the committee while walking through the Agency of Education templates. "I'm gonna dare say we're proficient with it." He listed the main facility standards the state outlines — operations and maintenance, capital improvement planning, emergency operations, and physical security — and said the district already has systems in place for most elements.
Jamie described outside assessments undertaken recently, including visits by contractors from the Vermont Safety Security Center and a statewide contractor that provided a scorecard of building conditions. "They came and actually did an assessment of our buildings... we fared very well," Jamie said, while adding that some components — notably practicing reunification off-site — remain "work in progress."
Committee members praised the work, with Giuliano saying the district likely falls between "proficient" and "advanced" in implementation and urging staff to compile the information into a cohesive capital-improvement report. The committee discussed using Agency of Education templates to finalize the district's self-assessment and pulling together financial and technology components in the capital improvement plan.
Next steps: staff will continue to compile the facility self-assessment using state templates and return to the committee with a consolidated report and suggested ratings for committee review.
