The Newport News School Board approved a multi‑item consent agenda and adopted several grouped policy updates and the district’s proposed FY‑25 legislative program during its Dec. 17 meeting.
The consent agenda — covering minutes, financial reports, personnel items, an emergency student relocation MOU and a donation agreement — carried by unanimous roll call. The board next approved the proposed FY‑25 legislative program as presented; that motion passed 7–0.
Later the board considered multiple blocks of revised policies across chapters (foundations and basic commitments; strategic‑plan‑related policies; school‑community relations and agency relations). Most policy blocks passed by unanimous roll call; one block of strategic‑plan‑related policies carried 5–2 after questions about timing and whether policy AE should be deleted and embedded elsewhere.
Chair Lisa Searls Law read formal recognitions and the assembled motions recorded vote tallies as part of the official minutes. Board members thanked staff and the policy committee for their work on streamlining language, updating procedures and removing redundancies. Several members asked that staff note which policies now contain material transferred from deleted policy AE so the board can easily locate the embedded language.
All formal approvals were recorded in the meeting minutes; the board asked administration to provide more detail on where transferred policy language was embedded and to follow up after the strategic‑plan adoption.
