The Newport News School Board voted unanimously on April 24 to approve two senior appointments recommended by Superintendent Michelle Mitchell.
Mitchell recommended Dr. Yvette Smith as executive director of human resources, noting her doctorate in educational leadership and prior experience as assistant superintendent of human resources and professional development in another district. The superintendent also recommended Robert C. White for executive director of public information and community involvement, citing his master's degree and prior communications and public affairs roles, including work with Marine Forces commands.
A board member moved the personnel recommendations, a second was recorded, and the motion passed by roll call vote 7–0. The superintendent said the board looks forward to introducing the new executives in person in a future meeting.
