Newport News Public Schools students took first and third place honors in the 2025 Third Congressional District App Challenge; the winning Maritime Engineering and Environmental Studies Academy team built an automated 'library logistics' checkout app.
Board members recognized Newport News students who won awards in the 2025 Third Congressional District App Challenge.
Officials announced a team from the Maritime Engineering and Environmental Studies Academy won first place for a "library logistics app," an automated checkout system designed to simplify library management for students and teachers. A student from Menchville High School placed third with an app called Vista Tracker, a facial-recognition tool to help students who forget their IDs.
The board invited winners and their families to the dais for certificates and thanked program staff, principals and partners including Old Dominion University for supporting the collaborative lab school model. Board members asked the crowd to applaud and the meeting took a short recess to allow families and honorees to depart if they wished.
