Board recognizes students and volunteer partners, accepts donations and hears school improvement plans

The Westmoreland County Public Schools board paused routine business to recognize students and community partners. Principals introduced character-trait honorees for November (honesty) and Miss Rice presented attendance winners; the board also accepted a list of donations to each school, including monetary gifts, food and school supplies.
Marjorie Churchborn recorded remarks for the Heart of Gold designation and praised the district—or partnering with the American Heart Association on heart-health programming and hands-only CPR instruction. "This program has and does save lives every single year," Churchborn said in recorded remarks.
Principals from Culpepper Elementary, Washington District Elementary, Montrose Middle and Westmoreland High presented school improvement plans with three recurring goals: raise reading pass rates, increase math proficiency, and reduce chronic absenteeism. Culpepper set targets to move reading pass rates from ~60.26% to 70% and to reduce chronic absenteeism from 15.74% to 12%; other schools outlined aligned actions including progress monitoring, MTSS, PLCs and targeted small-group instruction.
The board approved the consent agenda and the donations by voice vote. Trustees also highlighted student activities including robotics teams, a student video that received VSBA recognition, a drone competition and other extracurricular successes.
The meeting closed after agenda items and announcements about upcoming VSBA events and the district calendar.
